Jaime "Loy" Arviz - King of the Istambays (notice the armed guard watching him closely?)
This is Loy during one of his breaks from "shooting". We could always count on Loy for help and laughter. He used to carry books around to meet us in school and in turn meet some girls.
You will hear more about Loy from the barkada soon.
These photographs were taken by Ramon "Pats" Olmedo and sent to Julian to remind him of his old neighborhood which he hasn't seen since 1969.
Memories ni Omar: i remember when we used to bang on garbage cans and yell "truck ng basura" and people would come rushing out of their apartments with their basura pero walang truck. and of course we would all be gigling behind the wall in front of our house.
i remember when loy would ask the kid selling "turon" if he wanted to talk to an "artista" and while the kid was talking to one of loy's girls on the phone, his "turon" would be flying out of the basket towards the library where someone else would catch and stash it away for later consumption.
i remember when pip and i would catch cats and put a paperbag over their heads and watch them walk like drunks.
i remember when bing, manolo and myself, stuck a garden hose down a rat hole in our yard and poured gasoline down the hose and then threw a match down the hole. it would whoosh and the rats would come out in flames and we would club them with a "dos por dos". one rat managed to get into the house and it finally stopped and died under the sofa in the living room. i guess it ran out of gas...
i remember aling chayong trying to balance the receiver on top of the phone instead of the cradle.
i remember bing, manolo and i would take danny aso, nanding bakal and others to get ice cream and we would instead take them to the cemetery and kick them out of the car.
i remember when mike drew a star on some white paper and wrote under it .... "parol". it used to hang outside of the olmedo's house. even then kids would "tirador" it.
i guess i did a lot of stupid things in my life...
Memories ni Pats: si Putol>; makikiinom at pagtapos uminom isosoli ang baso na nakasuksuk sa putol niyang kamay, nanghihingi o nanlilimos rin sa neighborhood just para may panginom.
One of the Chabacanos'(Illera family) that lived in front of the deleons. I remember Pip coined a name for him "lost chika", kasi parang pusa ang lakas ng pang-amoy pag may kainan o meryendahan bigla na lang sumusulpot.
Si "lasengga" pag nakainom ng syoktong nagwawala, nanghahabol at nambabato pagtinutukso siyang lasengga. Kaya iyong anak niya ay nakilala as si "boy lasing".
