Dream Girls of 1963 Gina Tan, Marissa Puno, Azon de Leon and Papoose Olizon
Poose Olizon: hi, found this old photo way back 1963..high school pa ako...at left is Georgina Roska..was it omar who said classmate niya si Gina? she was our neighbor in Washington St.after the house of Aling Ingka Mariano..nuong umalis na si Azon naging close kami, then she became close to Marissa Puno, sister of Clemens, the girl seated next to her...im sure kilala na ninyo ang dalawa pa riyan...grabe, even my daughters were never ganyan kapayat....
Julian: Party time, Pinoy style. The binibinis used to sit at the other end of the party room waiting for the guys, who were lined up at the other end. The guys rush towards them and ask them to dance. The guys pretend to head for a certain girl and then turn to another girl at the last moment. very mean. Girls made sure the guys don't get to close while slow dancing by placing their elbow directly on the guy's chest. very cold.
Vino: Ang fun activity pa ng mga bugoys pag Christmas season - kanyon kawayan, may kerosene sa loob, at lata ang bala.
I didn't join the Beatles concert. Walang kotse or most of the time uniformed ako of what you're doing because we had a different group. Rainmaker/Bugoys kayo, kami naman Lavativa.
Member namin si Alex Rosca, younger brother of Georgina Rosca. Later on Gina Rosca married a guy whose last name is Tan. Kaya Gina Tan siya. (True story, not a joke).
I remember, I as a Bugoy/Rainmaker used to go out with you, karnabal sa UST. Me karera ng daga. And another of your pasttime was pula't puti. Even the traffic light pinupustahan nyo. Kung pula o green. I remember sa likod nila Julian, me barbel.
Omar: the kawayan cannon with heated kerosene and when it backfires "sunog ang pilik mata at kilay mo". one time we had a kawayan cannon fight between the kids from metrica and the kids from simon. we fired the cannon and the "lata" hit ralph hahn on his eyebrow. he was an innocent bystander but when we all saw that he was bleeding, we all ran away.
to add to mikes recollection of the karnabal trips to ust. we used to go to a shooting gallery and try hitting the target with a "pardigones(BB gun)". When we couldn't hit the target we just aimed for one of the prizes, a can of pineapple juice. the owner did not notice but as we walked away from the booth, you could see that the can of pinapple juice was leaking. "salbahe ano?"
also prominent is mike's "pa kuela"... for example, he wrote "mike" on his 4 front teeth so that when he smiled you could read his name. ok guys, remember any more of those? anybody remember when nardo (aka ponga) was sleeping in the library of our house and he came running up the stairs and was yelling " inakap ako ng multo". i wasn't there but it was the time when loy and julian where kings of 1572 metrica st.. i hear loy even changed his name and would introduce himself as julian's brother...loy oteyza. omski

How Did the Kantoboys Stay in Tremendous Shape?
They stayed in shape by playing challenging games. They hardly got sick because of this.
It helped them stay up all night.
Pats: pekwa, lucky nine and blackjack, tatlo't wala(3 pc-coins) or cara y cruz(2pc.coins), palmo, basketball shooting (sa bodega), sometimes sa textcardgames pag talo kana at ubos na ang textcards ang tinataya ay pera-pera na.
Vino:taguaan(hide and seek), basketball with "lamang suot", tiradoran (fun but dangerous), sarrangola, piko.
Vino: Jump and rope and skip tumalon. Jump and rope and skip tumalon.
karera ng bangka sa canal. Jai alai sa pader using cigarette carton as sesta.
Omar: another weired game that bing, manolo and i invented....it was called "karera ng garapata"... we would take 3 or 4 garapatas from our dog and then line them up and let them race to a finish line ( the edge of another tile on the floor )...the race took a few minutes because the "garapatas" were all very "mataba" and did not move very fast. anyway the garapata that crossed the finish line was the winner and was then smashed with a "martilyo". weirdo ba?????
How Did the Kanto Boys Survive?
They ate healthy exotic foods just like the Tasadays.
Ching sold tiratira, bukayo, hopia, champoy
The street vendors sold balut, okoy, taho
They climbed trees for hilaw na mangga, aratiles, bayabas
santol, kanasi( yung maasim ), clemens famous "yosi con candy" so that he wouldn't have to share anything, mamon, cosmos sarsaparilla, buko, taho, halo-halo at nesto bato's store, peanuts cooked in garlic, okoy.
Halo Halo from Nesto Bato's store
Some Kanto Boys of Metrica
Taken in front of the Oteyza's house some time in the '60s
from left to right: Manolo Bulaon, Bill Florendo,Bing Poblador, Julian Oteyza, Serranilla kid, Don Loy Arviz
Finally from Antonio:
Christmas is around the corner and a big part of our childhood was during Christmas time. Do you remember our cumbanchero group or caroling group. I played the harmonica or silindro and someone played the drum made of tin can covered with plastic sheet. We would go from house to house singing carols and we get 5 or 10 cents from each house. They play a lot of oldies songs on the radio here and it sure bring back memories . We had a small band with you as our lead singer belting out Elvis songs. We had ukeleles as our guitars and a base instrument made from an army gasoline tank and a piece of rope. I sure enjoy the music of the Ventures like Walk Don't run and Taradiyng Raw Hide. Julian had that 45 record of Bumble Bee Boogie and we never got tired of playing it. And of course I remember the girls. There was Inday, the classmate of Papoose. She took care of my papers at the airport when I left in 67. There was Susan, the cousin of Elizabeth who is now Joe Poblador's wife? I seem to develop crushes easily on chubby ones at the time. i will dig up some more memories and share it with all of you. Tony
Vino adds: Actually I don't drink. Kung minsan I call myself Vinny Yak.
Omar: i remember when we came back from summer vacation in baguio, we were told that Ollie's mom got mad and "sinunog yung bingo game". yeah, the numbers were in a red cylinder which you turned and a number would fall into a small pocket on the side which the caller pulled out. i do remember when we worked briefly for EDF in makati. we sorted IBM cards which contained info on ball bearings. the kotse you are refering to was called a morris minor na kulay blue. it's the same car bing, manolo and i took when we followed marisel and her sister to a resort. we hit a pothole and broke the axle and pats and julian rescued us and on the way home we stopped at some club in bulacan when they said "mag enjoy kayo dahil pagdating sa bahay, yari kayo kay ermat". i was grounded for 2 weeks. i was not allowed to go out.
